The Cotton-top tamarin is endemic to Colombia, its population decreases every day mainly due to the destruction of its habitat and the commercialization of wild fauna. At this time they are confined to a small area in northwestern Colombia. In their fight for survival, they have found in Jaibazul a place to live and prosper.

Between 1960 and 1970, 20.000 to 30.000 Cotton-top tamarins were exported to the United States for the purpose of conducting biomedical research on colon cancer, seriously reducing their population in Colombia and threatening their survival. Although it is now illegal to capture, hunt and trade cotton-top tamarins, both in Colombia and the US, tamarins are found in remote areas where it is very difficult to protect them effectively.
